Funky Monks...
By
counterfieter
at
15:17
For some reason I'm going through a big 80's electro funk phase, read below for my top trax in this much malagined but influential genre (the pic is a talk box by the way, as used by Zapp)...
1) Heartbreaker by Zapp
The titular woman treats Rodg so bad, she sold his precious collection of talk boxes to buy jewels, she said his glittery suit and PTM combo was naff and then she ran off with Prince who had a bigger vocoder..but Rodger doesn't mind as she gave him the inspiration for this glittering electro novelty...odd how contemporary it sounds?
2) Tonight by Kleeer
More pornographic squelching synth pads and oily slightly creepy vocoder...sort of the sound track to a pedophile convention in Dusseldorf..introduced to me only a week ago by a student.
3) Glide by Pleasure
The slappathon to end all slappathons...
4) Single Life by Cameo
Jolly lyrical meditation on swinging, but the eery music sounds completely grim however like Larry Blackmon just caught the clap from a lady boy...
5) Busting' Out by Material
Relentless urban art funk by Bill Lazwell and former Labelle singer Nona Hendryx..they were told by a deranged millionaire to make a hit disco record and spent loads of money producing this racket, it sank like a stone...
6) Ghetto Life by Rick James
The lizard like Mr James looked like a cross between Cher and Tutankhamen but that did not stop him producing a classic album in Street Songs, this being the best cut..

AC-7 Pro iPad DAW controller
By
ciaran
at
13:37
Well, we've had the chance to play with the iPad and AC-7 Pro for a few hours and the conclusions are, well, mixed.......
Getting the iPad and your DAW talking to each other is a little fiddly (you need to install a couple of additional apps on the Mac - see our walkthrough with Logic), and doesn't work every time, but once you're up and running, everything starts off promisingly.
Once we were all set up, the entire LSS staff squeezed into the office to have a play, and within minutes we were seeing the potential of using the iPad and AC-7 Pro in our mixes and lectures - there were more than a few of us who went from "I don't see the point of an iPad" to "I have to have one - now!"
Eventually I managed to coax the iPad away from everyone else, as it was time to put AC-7 Pro through its paces.
When you first open up the app, it takes a little while for the fader positions to be recognised. You can give them a little nudge on the iPad, or try scrolling up and down the fader banks, and they start to behave themselves.
I'd like the option to lock onto your fader selection - once you touch a fader, it's too easy to accidentally drift to the side while looking at the DAW screen, and start moving the adjacent channel. Mixing on faders is always a more instinctive process than using a mouse, and the control is smooth and accurate.
Transport controls are reliable enough, but that's where the good news ends. Things now get buggier than an entomologist convention.
As soon as you try going beyond basic fader control, AC-7 Pro gets a little unpredictable. The channel select buttons behave erratically, and the Multifunction controls never seem to do the same thing twice. Sometimes the GView controls affect just the iPad screen, other times it also affects Logic. The Assign controls have no obvious function at all.....
I don't want to dwell on the faults with AC-7 Pro too much, as the potential for this is awesome - especially when compared to the price of a dedicated touch screen controller. I can see us using iPads in all of our studios in the future - but I'd wait a little while until Saitara iron out the wrinkles in the system.
Update
We've heard from the guys at Saitara, and they've told us about a way to get a more stable performance out of AC-7 Pro, by setting up a private network between your Mac and the iPad (see our updated setup guide). Given this a try, and it seems to help things a lot (looks like most of the problems aren't due to AC-7 Pro either - quite a few people are having issues with the iPad wireless connectivity).
With the private network setup, AC-7 Pro is a much more usable system - it pretty much behaves as a Mackie controller should do. I'd like to see a few extra features - dedicated pages for plugin and pot controls would really help make this easier to use, but at £5.99, you can't complain too much!

Logic, an iPad and AC-7 Pro
By
ciaran
at
17:27
I too was a bit of a cynic when it came to the iPad. What would I use it for? Do I really need one? Well, we've got our early iPad delivery, and I've been putting some of the audio software through its paces, starting with Saitara's AC-7 DAW controller.
"Logic, an iPad and AC-7 Pro" > read the full post
There'll be a full review over the next 24 hours, but as it's a bit fiddly to get AC-7 Pro up and running with Logic, here's a getting started guide.....
Installing the ap on the iPad is as simple as ever, but once you open AC-7, you'll quickly realise there's no setup menu - everything else has to be done from the computer.
Edit: we've heard from the guys at Saitara, and they recommend setting up a private network between your Mac and the iPad. Given it a try, and it's a much more stable option. This is easy:
Step 1: Go to System Preferences> Sharing
Step 2: Turn on internet sharing (From Airport)
Step 3: From the Airport menu bar, create a Network
Step 4: Give the network a name
Step 5: Open the iPad WiFi settings, and choose your new network
That's it, your network is ready. OK, you won't be able to use wireless internet at the same time, but let's face it, you should be concentrating on mixing...
You'll need a couple of applications installed on the Mac, starting with DSMI Server for OSX (this is confusingly called DS MIDIwi-fi).
This allows you to send MIDI from one device to another over W--Fi, without having to set up a LAN. Once you open the ap, DS MIDIWi-fi appears as a MIDI port.
Open up Logic, and from Preferences, go to Control Surfaces Setup
Select a New Install, and select a new Mackie Control, and press Add
Next, set the Out Port and Input to DSMIDIWiFi
Open up the AC-7 ap on your iPad, and you're up and running. It can be a bit buggy, so try moving a few faders up and down, as well as moving along banks of faders (as a good indicator, the play button on AC-7 should glow green when the sequence is playing).
Trouble is, there is currently no way to see the Logic track names on the iPad. For this, you'll need MIDIPipe installed, and this .mpmi file (MIDIPipe setup file).
Run the AC-7 ProMC.mpmi file, and change the Out Port in the Logic Control surface setup to MidiPipe Input 1
That's it - you're up and running.
We'll do a proper review over the next couple of day, so we'll see you back here soon!

Musical?...Bored at work?

Everyone likes a good list, especially if it includes Elle Macpherson, although I always preferred the dark haired Jaclyn Smith to Farrah...but I digress, I have found a good site to while away the working day for the musically minded...
A group of completely unqualified dofuses have cobbled together a website consisting of loads of music related lists, including "Greatest Car Songs", Greatest Beach Music Songs" along with the more conventional "Greatest Rock Guitarists" and my personal favourite, "Greatest Symphonic Power Metal Songs"...
Like all such lists they drive you mad with rage while leaving you wondering why it should irritate you so much that some 16 year old pituitary retard living in a kennel in Ohio thinks that "Another One Bites The Dust" is a better bass line than "Good Times"....
Click HERE to waste a few hours of your life that you will never get back....There is also a write your own guitar tab and a guitar chord finder...
Don't get me started on the movie lists...

Hunter Scott's Mental Note takes a Star Wars Force Trainer toy, which contains EEG-style sensors, and hacks it to control musical notes. By hacking the hardware and creating some custom software, Scott came up with a primitive way to "control music with mind bullets".
While the concept is pretty cool, the output is a sort of work in progress. Check it out.......

The Heart Chamber Orchestra: Music "From The Heart"
By
nadya
at
00:22
The Heart Chamber Orchestra - HCO - is an audiovisual performance where musicians control a computer composition and visualisation environment with their heartbeats. The musical score is generated in real time by the musicians' heartbeats. They read and play this score from a computer screen placed in front of them.
HCO forms a structure where music literally "comes from the heart". It's an interesting approach to generative classical music, and creates some musically interesting results. For more details, and the videos, read on.......
How does it work?
The musicians are equipped with ECG (electrocardiogram) sensors. A computer monitors and analyzes the state of their hearts in real time, and the acquired information is used to compose a musical score with the aid of computer software. It is a living score dependent on the state of the hearts. While the musicians are playing, their heartbeats influence and change the composition, and vice versa. The musicians and the electronic composition are linked via the hearts in a circular motion - a feedback structure. The emerging music evolves entirely during the performance.
The resulting music is the expression of this process and of an organism forming itself from the circular interplay of the individual musicians and the machine. Check out these performances:
For more details about the HCO's concepts and project, check out their website.

Mix Engineer Young Guru's Tips - Take It From The TOP
By
face

12:01
There's always that mystique of what really happens during a recording session with the big guys, as far as mix engineering goes there's always the myth of the ways in which those classic albums were put together and it's fair to say that those stories do make for interesting reading when the memoirs are published.
Let's talk Hip Hop music now, which as we know is primarily devoid of micing music instruments and generally less involved with the more irksome aspects of mix engineering but nevertheless a situation that requires a savvy head to run the boards and handle session takes efficiently.
Take a name like Jay Z for instance, a successful recording artist that continues to break grounds commercially and constantly raise the bar on the quality of music we get each time a new album of his is released, could there be a trade secret involved here? What steps are taken by his studio engineer that gives the finished article that edge over the others? Here's a publication that lets you hear it from the proverbial horses mouth...search for the answers and you will find!

Walking on Eggshells is a 24-minute documentary about appropriate, creative influence, re-use and intellectual property in the remix age. It is a conversation among various musicians, visual artists, writers and lawyers, all sharing their views on why and how we use and create culture, and how intellectual property law - originally designed to provide people with incentives to create - sometimes hinders creative production far more than it enhances it.

GrainCube: Free Granular Instrument (Reaktor, Lemur)
By

20:12
GrainCube is a free 4-part granular processing instrument with numerous randomizing functions and modulation capabilities. Built on sound designs and conception by sonic renegades Richard Devine and Josh Kay (DevineSound), development by Rick Scott (Rachmiel), with additional programming and GUI tweaks by Igor Shilov (Twisted Tools). An additional version is also available for the JazzMutant Lemur, re-imagined by Antonio Blanca (absoundscapes.com). A dream tool from a dream team!
The tool is free, a gift to people in the Reaktor and Lemur communities: Reaktor 5.x is required, Lemur isn't necessary (but fun).
Seeing work like this is inspirational. I love the sounds, alien and twisted. At its heart, it is a sample map of 400mb of sample material, the sonic raw material for the work. An all-stops-pulled array of randomization and modulation then warps and melts and smelts that into audio ore.
For a sense of the tool in action, read on for the video and download link......
If you're a Reaktor user, grab it here (see "Library").

I had a listen to the latest effort from California based electronic music producer Flying Lotus and have come to the conclusion that just when you think music nowadays isn't spawning anything remotely era defining you might want to hold the presumptuous thought till you explore "Cosmogramma" which is simply a form of music genius disguised as Synth heavy Space dance music.

With backgrounds in Hip Hop, Disco, Electro-Funk, Techno and elements of World music infused into his creativity it is not surprising that something as interesting as this comes to life.
The album starts off with Clock Catcher and captivates from that point onwards, there is so much that can be felt as each track takes you on a aural journey beyond what might have seemed likely listening to anything other than old Pink floyd. Highlights on the album include 'Dance Of The Pseudo Nymph', 'Table Tennis' and 'Zodiac Shit' each with its own argument and presence within the mix and then there's the collaboration track '...And The World Laughs With You' featuring the vocals of the hallowed Thom Yorke, utter brilliance!

The APC40 was released middle of 2009 to much acclaim... "WOW! it's a groovebox that makes Live's boring GUI a lot more attractive to mess around with" would have been a not so surprising quip uttered by nearly all who hadn't ventured into the software prior to its launch.
Less than a year on and guess what? The mini version for all who love power in compact devices has been unleashed...erm why? Well let's just say because its the best thing since its predecessor came to life.
The APC20 is the 40 less the 16 on board track control and device control knobs, bank select, nudge, tap tempo function buttons and the very handy play, stop , record and cross fader.
Now you'd ask why take them off? Answer: Novation did just fine with the launch pad!

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow (in Britney's case anyhow)
By
counterfieter
at
13:49
To become a star, talent, looks and stage presence all trail far behind having a good barnet...
Here are my top examples of hursuticular excellence, with some cheats that stray from music into general pop culture but were too good to leave out...
1) Randy Watson
Singer with legendary 80's "bedroom soul" throw backs "Sexual Chocolate", Randy first came to the UK's attention though his scene stealing performance in Eddie Murphy's laugh a minute "Coming to America". His flaunting of the infamous "jheri curl" set British hair salons alight with the desire for wet wrinkly hair like a skunk's scrot "tea bagging" your bonce.
Other famous Jheri's: Ice Cube (in NWA), all of Kool and the Gang.
2) John Oates
Doesn't he look pleased! I feel Oates' lip caterpillar just about edges out the other iconic 80's 'taches listed below, but its a tight call, I only go for John because he's probably a better singer than Tom, also John would certainly top any poll of 1980"s teeth.
Other famous fanny ticklers: Tom Selleck, Buffalo Bill Hickock, Tony Iommi
3) Pete Gabriel
Before soppy duets with Kate Bush and unavoidable age related lack of hair, Gabriel challenged the God's of male pattern baldness with this crazy inverse mohican. His spunk brought him prog rock super stardom and he later became the unlikely Armani suited quire of Rosanna Arquette...but the God's planned their vengeance and now Peter resembles the arse of a Mandrill, he is so bereft of hair.
Other great prog mullets: the rest of Genesis, Robert Fripp (70's version)
4) Larry Blackmon
Larry only made a "cameo" appearance in the charts with "Word Up" (geddit??), but his high top "fade" will live forever...Like John Oates he is a man of many talents, 80's fashion was never the same after Blackmon's Ferrari red cod piece became de rigueur.
Famous fades: Kool Keith, Eddie Murphy, Grace Jones
5) Ian Gillen
You were no one in 70's Heavy Metal unless you looked like a cross between Cousin It and Ursula Andress...None were hairier than Deep Purple shrieker Gillen. I once read a classic Victorian ghost story by MR James about a man who is killed by possessed hair, this pic of Gillen could have graced that stories front cover.
Other hairy metalers: Lemmy, Animal from the Muppets.
6)George Clinton
Dr Funkenstein himself has been seen on stage in silver moon boots, wearing a nappy and a blond wig so this writhing mass of Medusa's tentacles is relatively restrained. If it looks like a mugshot it's because it is, George arrested for driving on crack...or the attempted murder of his stylist.
Other freaky funker "dos": Rick James, Sly Stone
7)Pennywise the Clown
If you are thinning on top instead of shaving and trying to blend in with all the other Mondeo driving baldies why not make a feature of it? Wearing white pancake, dye it fire engine red, then have a sulky expression and rows of sharp teeth...all the better to scare you with my pretty...
If you end up on the sex offender register don't blame me...
Other folicaly challenged clowns: Phil Collins, The Edge
8)The Chi-lites
Its hard to tell how they managed to get their hair so perfectly round and, I suspect, buoyant? Maybe they were constructed by some specially trained bird of paradise flown in from Papua New Guinea for the task?
Other great 'fros: Jimi Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix's rhythm section, 70's Santana
9) Duane Allamn
Not only are we treated to Duane's famous handlebar but a furry tummy as well, you are spoiling us Mr Southern Rock Guitar hero...Was killed in a motorcycle accident, although it has long been rumored that this was engineered by B.A.N.G.E.R aka Bald American's Never Get Enough Respect, a militant organisation of bald hell's angles, jealous of Duanes voluminous bugger grips.
Other southern knights: Lynyrd Skynrd, Dr John
10) Ron Burgundy
You can almost smell the "sex panther" on this smoldering example of 70's lantern jawed manhood. A hero to millions who followed the way of the blow dryer..."You stay classy, San Diego,"
Other smoldering news readers: Anna Ford, Kirsty Wark
11) Frank Zappa
As well known for his complex jazzy avant garde chin foliage as he is for his complex jazzy avant garde music. His daring conversion of the Hitler mustache into a new beard format immediately made him the talk of the LA "freak" underground, some called him crazy, some said it could not be done...But now this man has a statue raised to him in Uzupis, the Lithuanianian's being known for their appreciation of facial hair, even if it is worn by a decadent capitalist westerner.
Other avant garde beards: Tutankhamen, 70's Lennon
12) Anthony Burgess
A Clockwork Orange has influenced god knows how many musicians with its unreadable dystopian babbling, but many have underrated the influence of his massive sweep over..actually I'm lying, no one has ever aspired to this vision of a nightmarish future state hair style inflicted by a totalitarian hair dresser..
Other sweep overs: none, it just looks too shit...
Bonus baldy:
13) Britney Spears
She may have seen it as a cry for help but instead it opened her fan base up to a whole new group of people who would have formerly shunned her music. Grebbos, crack addicts, Leveller's fans, concentration camp survivors, Duncan Goodhew...
Other "cry for help" crisis hair cuts: Sinead O' Connor, Phil Spector (at his murder trial)
Happy grooming...

Big fans of the IK MultiMedia stuff here, but this is a little outside their usual range.
The iRig is similar to their Amplitube software, but runs on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and of course the iPad......
But the really cool thing is the interface - an impedance matching I/O, that allows you to plug your guitar straight into the iPhone, and a headphone out. Ideal for practicing without annoying the neighbors. Up to three virtual effects pedals at a time, cab and head select, and both guitar and bass options. Expect around a £30 price tag.
